Vem ser vem? (Who sees who?)

Two cats in bronze are on separate parallel boulders. One cat has risen on its hind legs and made itself tall with all its attention focused on something in the distance. The cat on the stone block next door is sitting facing in the opposite direction. It has its attention focused on something at an angle in front of it and is crouched on its way to shoot its back. On the same stone back to back with the curled cat, a small mouse sits on top of a started apple with all its focus directed towards something it holds between its front paws.

A cat can be seen standing on its hind legs. In the background is a cat looking at the first cat and next to it is a small mouse on an apple.

All around Örebro, you will find Torsten Molander’s bronze animals sitting and watching passers-by. Gorillas, birds and one rabbit. On a couple of stones outside a group home in Lillån, we are met by two cats and a mouse, their attention focused in different directions.

The mouse, sitting on a half-eaten apple, is busy with something – maybe it’s eating something itself. The cats are looking in different directions. Don’t they see the mouse? And doesn’t the mouse see the threatening predators?

The title of the work draws our attention to the animals’ gazes – and our own. It is difficult to look at the cat perched up on its rock without wondering what those sharp feline eyes see.

Molander is himself a keen observer and has spent a lot of time studying different animals and their behaviours, movements and body language. He has, for example, been visiting the Kolmården Zoo for many years to study and draw the gorillas there.

Torsten Molander began his artistic journey at Örebro Art College and went on to study at the Gerlesborg School of Fine Art in Stockholm and HDK-Valand Academy of Art and Design in Gothenburg. He lives and works in Glanshammar.
