Väv av ögonblick (Weave of Moments)

On a slightly raised roundabout in the sidewalk, some flat sections have been set up on narrow steel bars, which cut out pale green silhouettes. They are similar to loose puzzle pieces but do not seem to fit together. Shapes and sizes vary. Some are bell-shaped, a couple resemble road signs and a larger section for the thoughts of a portal.

Light green, flat images attached to steel poles show silhouettes from the city.

To celebrate the turn of the millennium the Municipality of Örebro announced a call for two public artworks that would relate to both time and space. What we see here is the winning contribution to the Fisktorget square – Weave of Moments by Bo Samuelsson. The other artwork, an inverted fountain by Per Peterson, is located in Slottsparken and is called Svunnen tid och nya tider (Times Past and Times New).

Bo Samuelsson was born in 1957 in Linköping, studied at Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design and since the late 1980s has been doing exhibitions, projects and public works in various materials and expressions, often based on urban development and social issues.

Have you seen this work at Fisktorget along Engelbrektsgatan? It is an interactive sculpture that you need to move around in to see how it has frozen the moment in which the sculpture was created. What at first glance may seem to be abstract shapes are actually sections of the cityscape surrounding the artwork, as it looked at the turn of the millennium. This is a work of art made for this specific place. If it were to be moved, the entire idea would be lost because the surroundings and viewpoints are also integral components of the sculpture.

The city is in a constant state of transformation, so some pieces of the puzzle may not fit as well as they used to while others have lasted longer. In this way, the sculpture becomes a time capsule and a place for both interaction and contemplation of the city’s changes over time. Bo Samuelsson himself describes the work as ‘a place to stop, a place to see the city’.
Follow the sightlines in the platform and go exploring in time and space!
