Underlandet (Wonderland)

A small bronze sculpture of a rabbit stands on its hind legs on top of an open book. It stands slightly forward and supports itself with one paw on a rough stick whose lower end has its place in the groove between the pages of the book. In its opposite hand, it holds a rectangular thing. The rabbit is finely dressed in an elegant suit jacket with round buttons. The collar is raised and a ruffled shirt protrudes from the neckline. The ears are stretched back and the whiskers lie smoothly against the slightly bumpy cheeks.

A hare with a jacket, a fly holding a mobile and a cane. The ears are behind and the whiskers are clearly visible.

Ann Sidén on Wonderland: ‘“Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!” said the rabbit that Alice followed down the rabbit hole and into Wonderland in the classic children’s book from 1865. From the square on Drottninggatan, you can slide down to the micro-park on Köpmangatan and kiss the nervous rabbit on the nose.’

Along Köpmangatan next to Krämaren is a micro-park. The idea behind parks in micro-format is to give Örebro residents and visitors access to green oases despite an ever-densifying cityscape. What was previously a rather forgotten plot of grass that seems to have been mostly used as a shortcut now offers comfortable seating on garden benches placed amid plantings of ferns, ivy and sweet woodruff.

From the Krämartorget square, you can get to the park by either walking down the steps or sliding down the slide. Next to the slide and steps, Ann Sidén’s rabbit sculpture stands guard over the park. The rabbit is standing up, with its hind legs planted in an open book. All dressed up, with an umbrella in one hand and... is that a smartphone in the other?

Through the little figure from Alice in Wonderland, Ann Sidén connects the park with Lewis Carroll’s famous tale. Have you tried going down the rabbit hole and sliding into the micro-wonderland?
