Två kusiner (Two Cousins)

Two bronze animals of unknown species stand on a pedestal. The animals are about as tall as the base itself. They stand on their hind legs facing obliquely towards each other with a short distance between them. The bodies are coil-shaped. The backs sway slightly while the heads are held high with the gaze directed forward. The arms are very narrow. The elbows are pressed against the sides of the body while the hands meet over the chest without crossing or grasping each other. The large, notched ears are widely extended in each direction. The faces are wide with blunt noses and small slanted eyes.

Two bronze figures resembling two standing meerkats with sheep ears.

May Lindholm is interested in how we talk with our bodies and is inspired by both everyday encounters and professional dance. The results are humorous and psychologically astute depictions. Even when it’s animals she sculpts, they appear as very human.

The small cousins peer cautiously ahead with their hunched backs and raised arms. Lindholm has studied the body language of meerkats and the ears are sheep’s ears. What do their facial expressions say? Are they talking to each other?

Since 2003, May Lindholm’s bronze sculpture Tjockmagar (Fat Tummies) and Terazzobänkar (Terrazzo Benches) have also stood nearby. The fat tummies seem to be taken from the same fable as the two cousins, and the undulating design language and the speckled terrazzo cement in the base of Two Cousins are repeated in the benches.

May Lindholm grew up in Norway and studied at both the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry in Oslo and at the Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. She now lives in Dalarna and works with sculptures and environmental art.

Her artworks can be composed of many different materials, but Lindholm always starts by sculpting in clay. The farm she grew up on stood on clay soil and the material has been close to her heart since childhood.
