Tunnel till framtiden (Tunnel to the Future)

A hallway and bicycle tunnel have been shaped by a painting where color fields in clear shades meet each other. The monochrome and multicolor color fields have geometric shapes such as triangles and hexagons with sharp corners. Many contain motifs of various kinds, made with stencils. Several of these consist of abstract patterns, some of which are reminiscent of Arabic mosaics. There are also symbols and motifs such as elephants, faces and pointing hands.

Tunnel to the Future is a collective art project conducted along with artist Saadia Hussain and eight young people from different parts of Örebro. The youngsters had the artistic summer job of transforming a place and, with Hussain’s help, finding a common expression for things that were important to them.

The young artists developed six symbols each. These then became parts of the joint artwork on the tunnel walls. The end result was a kaleidoscopic design combining stencilled patterns with improvised shapes. The walls are colourful and ornamental – at once both decorative and full of symbolic energy. The richness of detail in the painting means that there is always something new to discover.

The project came about after the municipality conducted a survey showing that the tunnel was perceived as unsafe. Tunnel to the Future transforms it instead into a place for us all to stop and think, a public place for reflection and inspiration.
