Tulpan (Tulip). Fågel (Bird)

A rectangular approximately meter-high granite block is placed on a vertical edge. In the middle of this is a smaller oval block, about a couple of decimetres high, where the top has cut off sharply and left a round smooth surface. A little further on the ground is a rough almost square granite block whose four corners are bent up towards the sky. They bend just enough to form a small depression in the middle.

Eva Lange is a sculptor who works with greatly simplified forms. In her sculpture group in Mellringe, the shapes of a tulip and a bird have been refined into elongated convex and concave movements in granite.

The organic softness is juxtaposed with the hardness of the stone. The sculptures present and preserve a moment – the beat of a wing and the serene vitality of the tulip. Lange often works in styrofoam and plaster, but for the outdoor sculptures in Örebro, the choice fell on the more durable granite.

Eva Lange was born in 1935 and studied at the Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design and the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, where she still lives and works. As a 19-year-old art student, she discovered ancient Cycladic art at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. The three to four centuries old, figurative, but highly abstracted sculptures inspired Lange’s own scaled-down expression.

What do you think? Does it feel like there is something ancient or timeless in Lange’s sculptures?

Eva Lange has received many awards for her art and is a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. Her works can be found throughout Sweden.
