The Dancer

On an round concrete slab, some imaginative shapes in strong colors have found their place. In the middle is a larger bright yellow sphere. This is based on several committees in different directions. The two protrusions at the top protrude quite far above the globe, like two horns with rounded tops. Other committees are more like round bumps. On the committees, circles are painted in different shades of green. Three smaller hemispheres are placed as a uniform triangle around the larger yellow globe. These all have a zigzag pattern in blue and red. The concrete slab on which the shapes stand has a circular pattern in blue, gray and orange / pink.

A blue circle in the ground with red lines. In the middle is a half yellow ball with protruding parts. Each part has three different green colors.

Do you like to play video games? Bright colours and sound, simplified shapes and cool movements characterize many video games, especially those targeted at children. In the sculpture group The Dancer, artist Anna Svensson took inspiration from visual currents in the culture surrounding children today.

Visually, the works bear a strong resemblance to images from video games, but the children have to supply the sounds and movements themselves. The intention was to create a space that gives energy, gets the imagination flowing and inspires play and movement. Have you felt the soft springiness of the rubber asphalt on the ground?

In designing the work, Svensson started with the circle shape and zigzag pattern, which she then repeated and varied: “The meeting between the soft and the hard, the sharp and the round forms the basis of the design.” This is a colour and design language that permeates all of her artistry, in both her three- and two-dimensional works.

Her paintings show influences of the richly decorated floral motifs of traditional Dalecarlian kurbits painting, combined with more contemporary imagery such as video games, animated films and comic books.

How do you interpret the title of the work, The Dancer?
