Terazzobänkar (Terrazzo Benches)

Three formations are placed on asphalt a few meters apart. The formations function as benches and are low, a few meters long and have a rolling S-shape. The surface is smooth and smooth. The benches are mainly white but sometimes meet on the upper sides of smaller fields that are dark gray in color. As these darker fields have undulating outer edges, patterns are formed that are reminiscent of yin and yang where the gray meets the white.

An undulating bench in two shades of terazzo gray.

May Lindholm grew up in Norway and studied at both the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry in Oslo and at the Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. She now lives in Dalarna and works with sculptures and environmental art.

Her artworks can be composed of many different materials, but Lindholm always starts by sculpting in clay. The farm she grew up on stood on clay soil and the material has been close to her heart since childhood.

The benches outside Almbyskolan are made of terrazzo, small chips of stone mixed in a cement mass to create a speckled artificial stone. In the undulating benches, lighter and darker terrazzo sections coexist in symmetrical forms.

Nearby are Lindholm’s Tjockmagar (Fat Tummies) and Två kusiner (Two Cousins), two small pairs of rodents in bronze. Both the benches and the sculptures were installed in 2003.
