Tell me

The phrase TELL ME written in giant capital letters has been scraped out in the beige plaster on the gable of an apartment building. The phrase covers almost the entire wall. The letters are written in two lines. The word TELL in the top row is on the left and the word ME in the bottom row is on the right. The letters can be seen straight through the artwork Catch of the Day which shows a narwhal tangled in a fishing line.

Wall where plaster has been partially taken so that the words "Tell me" were created.

“There are two types of strategies in site-specific art,” the artist Marja Kanervo has said. “You can choose to add something to a place or to take parts away from it. In recent years, I have been a big supporter of the latter option.”

Time goes by and always leaves new physical tracks behind. Places change constantly and carry traces from many different times. Public art is inevitably linked to questions about who is allowed to speak in public discourse and who is allowed to occupy the public space.

On a firewall outside the parking lot between the streets of Klostergatan and Gamla gatan is the wall painting Catch of the Day by Belgian street artist ROA. It’s become a bit worn since it was painted for OpenArt 2013, but it still gives voice to humankind’s violent repression of other animals.

Behind and through ROA’s picture, you can see Kanervo’s artwork from OpenArt 2011. By removing parts of the plaster from the wall, she spelled out the words “TELL ME”. This intervention on the wall wasn’t meant to tell anything to its viewers, though. Instead, it was the viewers who were invited to tell something themselves.

During OpenArt 2011, there was a picture on the wall at Örebro Art Gallery. There, visitors could draw and write what they themselves wanted to see on the wall. What would you like to add – or to remove?
