Spiral

On a cement plinth 50 cm high, as big as a single bed, is a work of art. One part of the artwork can be likened to a suction cup that has been sucked into the cement base. From the suction cup extends a screwed part, screwed like an ice drill in an arc over the cement plinth to finally tilt its head without a face, slightly towards the plinth.

Aluminiumspiral.

The sculpture Spiral consists of an elongated helical arch with a smaller and a larger end. With its varied shapes, it gives the impression of both weight as well as elasticity and movement. Where does it seem to you that the spiral movement begins and ends? From which direction does it come, and which end is the end point?

The sculpture was designed by Eva Hild, a ceramicist and sculptor, who was born in 1966 in Lidköping and studied at the HDK Academy of Design and Crafts in Gothenburg. Her art has been praised in the New York Times and her work is represented at the Swedish National Museum of Art. She has found her artistic expression in ceramics. By slowly putting together and shaping long sausages of stoneware clay, she sculpts large, thin shapes that are polished and fired in ceramic kilns to make them hard and durable. This sculpture is made of aluminium, a material that enables her to work in a much larger scale than what is possible in clay.

Hild’s abstract sculptural bodies do not resemble human bodies, but by appearing tense, relaxed, open, closed, light, heavy, hollow or contracted, they can arouse associations of physical and mental states in ourselves. This is what Hild herself has to say about her work:

Experiences in my life lead to emotions that I shape in the thin, shell-shaped volumes. Movement, elements and strong forces. The shapes oscillate and turn in on themselves. The empty space is just as much a part of the sculpture as the solid matter; the air volume is drawn into the sculpture. Bodies in which presence and absence meet.
