Solur (Sundial)

On top of a round, extensive concrete foundation stands a tall and narrow abstract steel sculpture with human features. In the indentations and bulges of the top narrow sheet metal, a face is indicated. Below this follows a wide sheet metal that resembles a shield. Slightly lower is a hollow section where three flat bars can be seen as the spine and arms. In front of him at waist height, it is as if the figure is holding a square box with a sheet metal plate on top, from which a long, light stick emanates.

The stick points obliquely forward downwards and reaches all the way to the ground. The legs of the figure consist of joined flat sheet metal sheets and, as it were, take just one step.

This sculpture was made at home in the artist’s former residence in Småland and is so tall that he was forced to make a big hole in the roof to make room for the entire construction indoors. But it’s outdoors and in sunny weather that the sculpture works as it should.

The artwork has a number of integrated functions that are all based on how light and shadow moves during the day or year. One sundial shows what time it is, while another quite simply shows if it’s before noon.

A third sundial has markings for different cities that are on the same latitude as Örebro, and show through the movement of a shadow when it’s twelve o’clock in each city. A hole in the middle of the sculpture’s central, standing part forms a beam of light that moves in a predetermined way as the year progresses.

The sculpture’s base is also filled with representations of the annual cycle. Stars are interspersed with information about the seasons of animal and plant life.
Roland Haeberlein was born in Munich and trained as a wood sculptor, first in Germany and then at the Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design.
