Kyssen (The Kiss)

The kiss is a sculpture formed by a square marble block with recesses, space shapes and plateaus. It is about one meter in diameter where the circumference is slightly more in height than in width. The sculpture can bring to mind Lego pieces that have been put together. From the middle of the upper part, a small formation protrudes which is at the same time both softly rounded and angular.

If this were a piece of furniture, the lower protruding part would be the footrest and the middle part the seat itself. The protruding formation divides the seating area in two and invites the viewer to take a seat in the sculpture.

Kyssen (The Kiss) is a marble sculpture standing along the Lillån river next to the old train workshops. It was made by Monika Larsen Dennis and is included in the Lilla-å sculpture riverwalk.

This is a sculpture that you yourself can become a part of, preferably with someone you really like. There are pits and gaps in the marble block suggesting that something has been removed and is missing – and there is an explanation for that. This sculpture is based on, and shares a name with, a sculpture made in 1882 by Auguste Rodin that depicts a seated kissing couple. Rodin’s sculpture was considered a bit daring for its time, but it attracted a lot of attention and is today one of the world’s most famous sculptures.

So how can you become a part of the sculpture in Örebro? Well, if two people sit down in Monika Larsen Dennis’s sculpture and place their bodies in the soft recesses, they become a reproduction of Rodin’s sculpture and a living homage to love. The sculpture can perhaps also become a hotbed for conversations about gender, power and sexuality.

Monika Larsen Dennis was born in 1963 and studied at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. She works with different types of media, including sculpture, photography, video and painting.
