Karl XIV Johan

Here, King Charles XIV Johan sits on a high and narrow pedestal. The figure is tight and erect even though the monarch in its entire length is only about a third as long as the plinth. He is depicted in full figure with his back to the water and is almost on guard with his gaze directed out over Järntorget and the city. One leg is placed slightly in front of the other and the boot-clad foot tip protrudes outside the base.

The footwear he wears is open and resembles a cloak. In his left hand he holds a thin sword whose upper part rests against one of his shoulders. In his right hand he holds a crown. On the pedestal there is a lion depicted.

Granite statue on a foundation several meters high.

In 1810, Jean Baptiste Bernadotte was elected Sweden’s successor to the throne at a meeting of the Swedish parliament, the Riksdag, in Örebro. He later ascended to the throne as King Karl XIV Johan.

As the 100th anniversary of the Riksdag meeting drew near, the citizens of Örebro organized a collection to raise funds for a monument to show off the city’s royal connections. A competition was arranged to decide who would receive the artistic commission.

The winning entry came from the self-taught Karl Alfred Ohlsson. Renowned sculptors of the time, such as Carl Milles and Carl Eldh, also submitted entries, but these were rejected.

After a nine-year delay the inauguration took place with splendour. Work on the sculpture was carried out during a time of suffrage and hunger demonstrations, but the statue expresses, with its 15-metre height, an invincible royal authority. Further down on the tall pedestal, between the King and us lowly spectators, a royal lion stands guard.
