Flicka med oljelampa (Girl with Oil Lamp)

A bronze sculpture depicts a naked young woman carrying a small oil lamp. She holds the lamp at chest height and protects it well, almost tenderly, with both her hands. The woman is in the middle of a small neat step. The hair is combed back and the gaze can be perceived as introverted, closed, almost a little dreamy.

The artist Anna Palm is most known for her portrait art, but the model for Girl with Oil Lamp is anonymous.

Anna Palm grew up in Arvika and her artistic career began with a modelling course at the local technical vocational school. She then went on to study in Stockholm, Copenhagen and Paris. After that, she travelled to Italy, where she stayed for several years.

In the 1920s, many Nordic artists went to Rome, and there Palm found an important community with other women artists. At the same time, the fascists had seized power in the country and at the Rome Biennale in 1926, Anna Palm exhibited a bust of Mussolini. The following year, she sculpted a portrait bust of the Swedish suffragist Ellen Hagen and in 1928, Girl with Oil Lamp was unveiled.
