Den blå himmelsängen (The Blue Canopy Bed)

A carpentry piece of furniture in light blue wood is placed in a field. The foundation, which is also the seating surface, can be likened to a threshold that is about three to four meters long and a couple of decimetres high. The asymmetrical backrest is about half as high as the length of the seat board and placed to the right of its center. The seats that are created on both sides thus become different sizes.

On the right side, the seat is short and the backrest is straight as on a regular chair. On the left side, the seat surface is twice as long, while the backrest has a concave shape that slopes gently upwards. On the top of the backrest is a brown silhouette head.

En snickrad sittmöbel i ljusblått trä placerad på ett fält. Fundamentet är tre-fyra meter lång och ett par decimeter hög.

In the artist’s own words, the blue canopy bed is meant ‘for sitting on, resting on, thinking on, cuddling on, taking a breather on, having a coffee on, just being on...out in nature’.

On an ordinary canopy bed, the fabric roof serves as a stand-in for the real sky. In Ingela Agger’s version, the bed has become a wooden chaise longue. The bed is painted in a sky-blue shade and instead of a canopy, the person sitting or lying on it can look up into the real sky.

You can enter Agger’s canopy bed from two different directions, and at the very top of the double backrest is a silhouette of a head constructed in metal sheet. The entire ‘bed’ forms both a giant pedestal for the little head and a sculpture in its own right.

Ingela Agger lives and works outside of Östansjö, south of Örebro. The artwork was a gift from the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, Hopajola and Studiefrämjandet to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Naturens hus.
