Berså (Arbour)

On the wall next to a full-covering glass window hangs something that at first glance looks like a square mirror in a white frame, or possibly a giant flat-screen TV. But it's neither. What we see is a work of light where foliage silhouettes frame a changing play of light.

At this very moment, it's like looking out and seeing a piece of light blue summer sky with light white tufts of clouds framed by narrow birches where the spring leaves have just burst out. At the same time, parts of the indoor environment are also reflected in the view.

På väggen vid sidan om ett heltäckande glasfönster hänger en vit ram där lövverkssilhuetter ramar in ett skiftande ljusspel

"I try to imagine the ultimate situation for relaxation. What conditions create moments of pleasant rest, where you can relax, forget about all your worries for a while, and just enjoy with all of your senses.

The image of an arbour where rays of sunlight shimmer through gently swaying greenery... Under trees and among bushes, there is always, during the summer months, a welcoming cool temperature, perfect light intensity and pleasant calming dynamics. Full of life and peace."

This is how the artist Aleksandra Stratimirovic described her thoughts behind the work Arbour at the Karlslundsgården nursing home. She wanted to create an interactive work of art and was inspired by thoughts of a window to nature. The result was a light artwork in which the silhouettes of foliage frame a dynamic light show.

The light show changes according to three settings in a pre-programmed schedule. The first setting controls the background light, which mimics the differing light conditions of morning, daytime and evening light, the darkness of night, and sunrise and sunset sequences. The second setting offers random fluctuations in light that imitate cloud shadows and light shimmers.

The slightly faster light variations in the third setting are triggered by the work’s viewer through a motion sensor in the ceiling in front of the light box. The hope is that the work will feel both soothing and living. What feelings does the artwork evoke in you?
