Åkullens väktare
In the middle of a grassy hill stands a pierced three meter high sloping granite block, like a memorial stone. The hole in the middle of the stone is half a meter in diameter. One side of the stone is wavy. The waveform is polished while the opposite side and the rest of the stone are unprocessed.
At the foot of the hill, in line with the large stone, stand two half-meter-high smooth stones with curved upper sides next to each other. Like a gate ajar. On the corresponding side, in line but turned away from the large stone, lies a stylized animal with a rounded body and head with a flat polished face and chest.
In a small park in the Norr district north of Örebro city centre is Åkullen – a bare hillock with gently undulating rock slopes. Next to it is the sculpture group Åkullen’s Guards. A number of shaped blocks of stone come together here to form a contemplative space in the northern corner of the park. Visitors to the site can sit down on one of the rough stone benches and take in both the artistic and the natural scenery.
The artist behind the work is named Uta Jacobs and she likes to design the entire space around her artworks, just as she has done here. Jacobs comes from the Eskilstuna area and studied at Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. She has performed a number of public art assignments, including in Degerfors, Katrineholm and Flen. About her work, Jacobs has written:
My shapes often derive from nature but oscillate between the organic and the geometric. I also use the transformation of magnification, in which small fragments take on a sculptural form in granite.
The Lillån river flows through the park. The shapes of the stone sculptures reflect the ripples of the water like large waves. Some sides of the stone blocks are rough, and some have been polished until they’re completely glossy and smooth. The sculptures capture, frame and highlight the natural surroundings. Perhaps the calm of this place also makes us a little more receptive to everything around us.
Closest to the hillock is a stylized stone animal with its head turned toward Åkullen. Perhaps this is the animal that guards Åkullen, or perhaps all of the stone figures together form the hillock’s guard. But what are they guarding and why?
