The country is large in terms of area, approximately 450,000 km2 , which makes it the fifth largest country in Europe. It occupies the eastern part of the Scandinavian peninsula and it falls into two main geographical regions: the north, comprising about two third of the country, which is mountainous, and the south, which is most low-lying and where most of the population lives.
Because it is such a long country, there are big differences between the north and the south, for example, in the Swedish Arctic, the sun never sets during a few weeks each summer and never rises for a similar period in the winter.
