High-tech industry

To support and promote future development in the high-tech sector, three regional municipalities have set up KomTek, a municipal technical college tasked with stimulating interest in technology among young people, especially girls. KomTek is part of the EU´s Equal programme. Robotdalen ("the valley of robotics") is a corridor running from Örebro to Stockholm populated by high-tech companies who are world leaders in the research, development and production of industrial robots, field robotics and healthcare robotics. With huge growth forecast for robotics in the future, our goal is to make sure that Robotdalen has a leading position in that sector.

Other important players in the high-tech sector in and around Örebro include:

  • Ericsson Mobile Communications AB (Kumla) - radio modules and radio base stations.
  • Ovako Steel AB (Hällefors) and the Teknikens Hus research and education centre - special engineering steels.
  • ESAB (Laxå) - friction stir welding.
  • Arvin Meritor (Lindesberg) - axles for Volvo trucks.
  • Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB (Örebro) - rock drills, drilling rigs and mining equipment.
  • Dyno Nobel Sweden AB (Nora) - explosives and flammable liquids, from lighter fluid to explosives for mine blasting and demolition work.

Advanced Production Industry is represented by a strong group of small businesses, including:

  • Andon Automation AB (Örebro) - specialist skills in automatic arc welding.
  • Laxå Special Vehicles AB (Laxå) - special solutions and modifications for Scania trucks.
  • Mecdon AB (Laxå) - tools for the plastics industry.
  • Aerodyn AB (Karlskoga) - propellers and turbo machinery for the aerospace, power generation and other industrial markets.

Food and culinary art

The region is home to many food producing companies, from local small-scale farm producers to large and expanding national and international enterprises.Örebro University´s Department of Restaurant and Culinary Arts also contributes to the region´s reputation for culinary expertise. It has established strong links with business to promote the entire restaurant/catering sector, and its Restaurant Academy is renowned far beyond the borders of Sweden.

In addition to its commitment to enhance levels of quality and skills in the Swedish restaurant industry, the academy also conducts unique research into the overall aesthetics of dining.

The culinary industry shares much in common with the recreation industry - not least, the great potential for growth. It is our ambition here in Örebro that the sector will develop to take a leading position in its field in Sweden and beyond.
