Facts about Örebro

Örebro lies in the centre of Sweden and is the country´s seventh largest municipality. The city is about 700 years old. Some 134,000 people live in the municipality. Sixteen per cent of these have a background outside Sweden and 150 different nationalities are represented.

How is the municipality governed?

The municipality is governed by the municipal council, which is made up of representatives of the political parties. The number of representatives from each party is decided by how many votes the party gets from the citizens in an election every four years.

School and education

Örebro has approximately 70 nine-year compulsory schools for children aged 6—15 and many children go to preschool before that. From the compulsory school most young people go on to upper secondary school and there are seventeen such schools in Örebro. There are also schools here for young people with visual and hearing disabilities. Örebro University has approximately 15,000 students.

Libraries

There are a number of libraries in Örebro with newspapers, magazines and books in various languages. The largest is Stadsbibliotek in the city centre and there are smaller libraries in many parts of the city.

Attractions and facilities

There are many things worth seeing in Örebro. The old castle stands on an island in the river (Svartån) in the city centre, and in beautiful Stadsparken you will find Wadköping, an open-air museum with old timber houses. The water tower Svampen gives you views of the whole of Örebro.

Örebro has four indoor swimming pools and keep fit centres: Brickebackens bad, Eyrabadet, Hagabadet and Gustavsvik.
 
Wherever you live in Örebro you are close to parks and unspoiled countryside. The lake Hjälmaren is a couple of kilometres from the city centre. There are nature reserves on both sides of the mouth of Svartån, with excellent paths for cycling or walking. Naturens hus on the north side has a café and restaurant that are open all year round. To the west is Kilsbergen, with many areas for outdoor activities. You can reach different parts of Örebro and district easily by bike or bus.
